Back to Basics: Your Guide to Anti-Wrinkle Injectables:

Whether you are looking to smooth wrinkles, plump your cheeks or perfect your

pout, injectables – anti-wrinkle muscle relaxants and dermal fillers are available treatments to improve or enhance

your appearance.

There are now a variety of different injectable products on the market that range in

longevity, composition and viscosity, which can be quite confusing. With such a

wide range of sophisticated and ever-expanding minimally invasive procedures,

you need to know your best options.

Dermal Fillers

The ‘youthful glow’ associated with being young and healthy is often put down to

fullness and smooth, plump contours in the upper, lower and mid-face regions.

Fillers are gel-like in consistency and can be used in multiple areas to contour or reshape facial

features and add volume to lips and cheeks. It can also be used in combination

with anti- wrinkle injections to improve results. Longer Lasting fillers can

be used to reshape the nose and jaw line to create a more balanced and

harmonious face shape.

The type of filler (composition and viscosity), the area of injection and the

depth of injection all influence the final result, and how long they last.

Dermal fillers can help smooth out fine lines and fill superficial wrinkles.

Superficial filler products are quite soft and commonly used for more delicate

areas, such as the corners of the mouth, lip lines, and for Skin Boosting effects.

Medium volume fillers are injected more deeply than superficial products and

are used to treat deeper skin folds and enhance volume in certain areas such as

nasolabial folds and peri-oral areas.

Deep volume fillers can build and contour the face, acting similar to facial

implants. Deep volume fillers can be injected on bone and restore facial contours or add volume to where

it is needed, e.g. folds and depressions, as well as filling deep contours and

hollows. These fillers are usually placed on the surface of the bone and are

commonly used on the nose, cheek and chin.

Results?

Fillers will generally last anywhere between 6-18 months and beyond,

depending on the type of filler, amount injected and the depth of injection.

The level of movement in the injected area – for example frowning, talking and

squinting also affects the duration of the result.

Anti-wrinkle injections

When I began injecting Anti wrinkle injections in 2004, it was an exciting time.  The drug was new and More, more, more was often the standard practice.

The industry has come along way since then. Patients preferring a more natural result and there seem to be less frozen faces are walking around.

Anti-wrinkle injections offer an effective non-surgical option for reducing lines

and wrinkles to rejuvenate the face and help create a younger looking

complexion.

The most popular non-surgical facial rejuvenation treatment, these muscle

relaxants work by blocking nerve stimulation to wrinkle-causing muscles. This

prevents the muscle from contracting, reducing the appearance of wrinkles and

fine lines.

It’s commonly used to treat crow’s feet around the eyes and the frown lines

between the eyebrows (glabellar lines).

A few tiny injections are administered just under the skin, reducing nerve

stimulation to the targeted muscles. The procedure usually takes only 10

minutes, but this can vary depending on the number of areas being treated.

Anaesthetic is not required as the needles are very fine and only a small volume

of the product is needed, making the treatment quite comfortable.

Results?

The effects are not immediately visible. Over the next five or so days, the muscles

gradually relax, normally reaching their full results by two weeks.

Repeat injections are generally required every three to five months in order to

maintain results. With continued use, the effects may start to last longer because

the targeted muscles have ‘unlearned’ the response that originally contributed to

the development of the lines.  Even if a patient just had 1 treatment every Christmas for example,

the static wrinkles will not develop as rapidly.
